Hi! My name is Ashley Swail and I’d like to tell you a story about a mystical ceremony gone wrong. This took place several years ago before I began Mystic Training with Inelia. 

One spring while enjoying an unusually sunny day, I realized it was Beltane and wanted to take advantage of the seasonal edge to do some mystical work. As quickly as the idea came into my head, I sprang into action with my then housemate at the time and co-founder of iBenz Academy, Kara Consigli.

We rushed around the house, gathering ribbons, firewood, sage, and anything else that felt right. Our initial intention was small, to have a beautiful prosperous summer, but as we collected materials, our ambition grew. In no time, we had an intent to remove all low frequency from this planet, a fire going in the firepit and we were ready to begin—or so we thought. 

As we began calling in the elements, things started to go awry. At the time, I didn’t have a clear understanding of the difference between an element and an elemental or even that there was a difference. We also lacked clarity about why we were calling in these beings, but in our ignorance, we pressed on. 

We decided to invite the spirit of the river that runs behind my property—without specifying which spirit or checking its frequency level. Soon, the clouds rolled in, and it began to rain. We were drenched, and our carefully prepared ribbons had become a tangled mess, but we kept going. My cat, who had been outside with us, began acting strangely, running around and crying out. We didn’t think much of it at first and put her inside, but she continued to cry at us from the window—we commented on how unusual this behavior was for her. 

Despite the growing fear, we pushed on, even changing the location of the ceremony from the firepit to under a tree. As inexperienced mystics do, we then invited the spirit of the tree to join the ceremony. Later, we realized that we had different perceptions of what we had asked the tree, a clear sign that we were in over our heads. 

Eventually, I just couldn’t take it anymore. The fear I felt, along with the strange energies and beings that had gathered, became overwhelming. I realized we were in way over our heads and decided we had to stop. 

So we sheepishly began to undo what we had done. We unraveled the ribbon, reversing our intentions, put out the fire, and returned to our evening routine with our tails between our legs. 

In the end, it was a series of colossal mistakes. We did not properly prepare for the mystical work, yet we were using mystical power as if we were toddlers playing with a loaded gun—never a good idea! The results were troubling, and we spent weeks repairing the damage we caused. 

I had incurred an energetic wound to my spiritual/energetic body, like it was bleeding, which left me physically and emotionally exhausted and drained. I also discovered that I had attracted a nasty dark rider and some of his companions from the river into my entourage. It took time to heal the wound and clear my entourage, but the experience left me with the realization that I needed to learn more and better understand the power and responsibility that comes with mystical work. 

So, the moral of the story is this: whenever we host, facilitate, or hold mystic events or ceremonies, we need to be prepared. Taking the time to plan and do our due diligence as a mature and wise mystic ensures we avoid the type of mistakes I made that day.
